CUC asked to implement safe water system
The continued delay on the removal and replacement of asbestos cement pipes in at least seven villages on Saipan spells health hazards and dangers to hundreds of residents.
Rep. William S. Torres asked the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation to immediately begin the implementation of the Safe Drinking Water program to ensure quality and safe drinking water.
Mr. Torres called the attention of CUC Division of Water Manager Jesus Castro to replace existing asbestos cement pipes in the villages of Gualo Rai, China Town, Sugar King, San Vicente, Kanat Tabla, Afetnas, and San Antonio.
He said leaking and damaged water pipes are at high risk of contamination due to possible infiltration . In fact, the congressman added, old asbestos piping is vulnerable to cracks and breaks, which increases the risk of contamination under normal operating condition.
“Asbestos is known to cause serious illness like cancer, it cause birth defects in babies and congenital defects, even asbestos poisoning,” said Mr. Torres.
Further, the congressman asked CUC that once the environmental assessment is complete, the utility corporation should immediately proceed with replacement of water pipes to prevent possible health risks.
Citing all reasons why the Safe Drinking Water program should be implemented immediately, Mr. Torres urged CUC officials to exhaust all efforts to prioritize a safe water system in the remaining danger zones where asbestos cement pipes are still buried underground.
Under the CNMI Safe Drinking Water Infrastructure Grant Program, CUC listed 16 projects to be undertaken for FY2001 where over 120,000 residents stand to benefit.
Included in the proposed projects are the drilling of new water wells on Saipan, filtration of the Achugao, Tanapag and Donnie springs, filtration of the new and existing Marpo well on Tinian, installation of service laterals and meters in Rota, and pump/chlorination housing on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
