Four rescued off San Antonio reef
The Department of Public Safety Boating Safety Section rescued four male individuals late Saturday night after their vessel was reported under distress off the reef west of the Pacific Islands Club in San Antonio.
A BSS preliminary report indicated that vessel operator Luis Guanzon, 45, Apolinario Dela Rosa, 51, William Capayes, 30, and Allan Campita, 32, were in good condition when rescued.
The group went on a fishing trip at about 5:30pm, taking off from the Fishing Base Ramp in Garapan and heading to the San Antonio reef area for bottom fishing. They arrived at the area at about 6pm, anchored the vessel, and started fishing.
The operator told a responding BSS officer that, at about 10pm, he tried to start the engine to try another fishing spot but the engine failed to start.
After several failed attempts to start the engine, the operator called the Emergency Management Office via VHF marine radio and asked for Boating Safety assistance.
BSS officers, on board DPS vessel Zodiac III, located the vessel at about 11:44pm. The vessel was towed back to the Smiling Cove Marina.
A safety equipment inspection was conducted on the vessel, which was found to be in compliance with BSS regulations.
