Veteran cue artist Jerry Soriano has his handprint all over the Miller Invitational 8-Ball Tournament held last Thursday at Round Two Bar and Grill.

The Saipan Ice & Water employee cruised through the elimination phase before getting ambushed by Rowel Mariano in the first game of the finals. He, however, put it all together in the winner-take-all second game to win the weekly championship at the Garapan sports bar.

After getting a bye in the opening round, Soriano notched his first win by defeating Annie Tesiro in the second round. He then took on host Jerry Vertudez in his next game and moved on to face Mariano in the semifinals. Soriano handily defeated him to secure a finals seat and the all-important twice-to-beat advantage in the finals.

Mariano, for his part, rebounded from the sorry loss by vanquishing the champion of two weeks ago, Jojo Talibong, to earn a rematch with Soriano.

It appeared he was halfway to earning his first win at Round Two when he upset Soriano in their second go around in Game 1 of the finals, but Soriano didn’t underestimate the newbie in the second game and proceeded to dominate Mariano, sinking all his required balls to win the tournament.

Other pool players that graced the competition were Ike Guerrero, Robert Ramirez, and Ron Chisato.

The Miller Invitational 8-Ball Tournament is sponsored by Pacific Trading Co., which finally agreed to pony up the cash and support the event a few weeks ago.

Entry fee for the invitational 8-ball tournament is $10 and the 16 slots up for grabs would come in a first come, first serve basis.

The winner of the tournament will bag a weekly championship trophy and a cash prize, while runner-up and third place will not go home empty handed, as gift items and cash prizes also await them.
