The Counseling Department of the Marianas High School hosted—for the first time—a Military Career Day on Thursday, attracting at least 30 high school students who showed interest in pursuing a military career after high school.

MHS counselor Hazel Tudela said the Counseling Department held the one-day affair to provide the students more options of what they plan to do after high school life and entering the military is such one option.

Tudela said the school invited a military recruitment team from Guam for the 80-minute presentation to 9th to 12 grade students at MHS.

Sgts. Dayne Thomas, Joseph Salas, Eric Arriaga, officer Rey Awa, and PO2 William Calimlim met with the students. Students were broken into groups so that the visiting recruitment officers could also discuss the opportunities one on one with the students.

Salas, who is a frequent visitor to Saipan, said they presented the students with the many benefits of entering the military, including educational benefits, job opportunities, and health benefits, among others.

He said most of the concerns the students raised during the presentation included questions on basic training, soldiers’ skills such as land navigation, rifle marksmanship, first aid and training at official training sites.

A high school student must be 17 years old to enter the military.

MHS principal Karen Borja, together with counselors Tudela and Grace Sablan, later handed Certificates of Appreciation to the recruitment team.
