SCC to attend DOI conference
Some officials and members of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce are set to attend the Department of the Interior-sponsored business conference this month in Hawaii.
“We’ll definitely be represented in the conference. Some of our officers, directors, and members are going,” said SCC president Charles V. Cepeda yesterday.
He said his own schedule prevents him from joining the trip.
The DOI will hold the annual Conference on Business Opportunities in the Islands on Nov. 13-14, 2006, at the Waikiki Marriott in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Cepeda said the chamber considers this conference important because “it is an opportunity between the government and private sector to work together to promote business in the region.”
He said it is also a great time to meet and interact prospective investors or business partners during the conference.
Cepeda said that since the CNMI has attracted investors out of that conference.
He cited the Bridge Investment Group which pursues a casino resort project on Tinian, California-based businesswoman Sedy Demesa who pursues a nursing program and other businesses, and Bridgecreek who has shown interest in the pozzolan mining on Pagan.
From the government side, the Fitial administration said that it would send a small contingent to the conference amid an ongoing cost-cutting measures.
The administration said it will send five to 10 officials to the business event.
The business conference gathers industry experts and regional businesspeople speaking on tourism, tourism and real estate development, infrastructure development, tax incentives, utilities and telecommunications, among other topics.
This conference is the latest in a series of events sponsored by the department aimed at stimulating private sector-led economic development in the insular areas.
The department has hosted two previous conferences and led three Business Opportunities Missions to five island jurisdictions over the last three years.
