PTC outlasts Fiesta Resort in double OT
Pacific Trading Co. edged Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan in double overtime, eking out a 96-89 victory in their game in the Inaugural Shirley’s Coffee Shop Invitational Basketball League Monday night at the JP Center Basketball Court in Garapan
Sheldon Taisacan drilled eight points in the first overtime, while Frank Sarmiento made five in the second extension period to end the more than three-hour game in favor of PTC.
PTC entered the win column after losing its first game to MBI, 72-75, while Fiesta had its two-game win run snapped, dropping the team to a 2-2 record.
In the first game, Advanced X-Terminators moved up to solo second place with its 2-1 slate after slipping past MBI, 74-71.
Fiesta had several chances at gaining its third straight victory, but free throw woes and end-game missed jumpers allowed PTC to steal the win.
Jon March Ong failed to give himself a birthday gift when he missed two charities in regulation that could have won the game for Fiesta. Ong muffed two more free throws in the last 22 seconds of the first overtime. Edgar Garcia, who had been making short jumpers in regulation, collared the offensive rebound after Ong’s miss, but the former’s jumper rattled out. Fiesta had another chance to nail he game-winning basket with Ferdie Dela Torre grabbing the rebound and pulled up for a right baseline jumper, but the buzzer-beating attempt also missed.
PTC and Fiesta had a seesaw battle in the first overtime with Taisacan keeping the former afloat with his surprise baskets. Taisacan’s shots were mostly easy ones, as Fiesta was too complacent on defense against the PTC second stringer.
Sarmiento opened the second overtime with a 3-pointer and went on to hit 2-for-4 from the foul line, while Erlan Lansang, Taisacan, and Jojo Garon added three points each to finally end the exhausting match.
Lansang paced PTC with 29 points, while Garon chipped in 24 points and went 6-for-8 from the foul line in the two extension periods. Sarmiento and Taisacan finished with 15 and 14 markers, respectively.
Chris Mojar led Fiesta with 19 points, while Jason Licop added 17. Ong contributed 15, De La Torre had 14, and Garcia and Jimmy Salazar tallied 10 apiece.
