Anthony Welch, a veteran lawyer with nearly three decades of experience, has won an appointment as chief of the civil division in the CNMI Attorney General’s Office, the office said Wednesday.

Acting Attorney General Gregory Baka in a memo announced Welch’s new position.

“I have full confidence in his ability to meet the challenges and demands that accompany this appointment,” Baka said.

Welch came to the CNMI after serving as an assistant attorney general on Guam and had previously served as secretary of justice in the Federated States of Micronesia. His extensive legal career also includes litigation on behalf of the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Department of the Interior and the West Virginia Worker’s Compensation fund among other clients.

In an interview, Welch welcomed his new role.

“I’m really proud of the people I’m working with and I think that the job will be a lot easier because of the quality of the people in this office,” he said.
