U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Alex R. Munson slapped yesterday a 37-month prison term on a man who was arrested for selling methamphetamine or “ice” near a public school on Saipan.

Munson gave defendant Guang Jing Chen, a Chinese, credit for the time he has already served in jail since being arrested last June.

After completing the prison sentence, the 45-year-old Chen will be placed on three years of supervised release and immediately delivered to Immigration authorities for deportation.

The judge ordered the defendant to pay a $300 special assessment fee and perform 100 hours of community service.

Munson ordered the U.S. Marshal to have the defendant assessed for health problems while in custody and for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons to provide him treatment.

At the hearing, assistant U.S. attorney Beverly McCallum recommended a 37-month prison term. Defense attorney G. Anthony Long recommended a lesser sentence.

Last Aug. 27, Chen pleaded guilty to three counts of distribution of a controlled substance.

A Drug Enforcement Administration special agent stated in his report that Chen was arrested after he sold $500 worth of “ice” to an undercover agent in front of a school in San Antonio.
