2 NMC students get $2K scholarship
Paying for college will be a little easier for two Northern Marianas College students, thanks to First Hawaiian Bank and Guam Business magazine.
Ashley Sikayun, an elementary education junior, and Roxanne Ferrer, a business administration freshman, both received checks for $2,200 at a ceremony yesterday at the Gualo Rai branch of FHB.
The two girls found out they were the recipients of the scholarship money last week, but they didn’t find out how much the scholarship was for until yesterday’s ceremony.
“It’s one of the biggest things I’ve ever experienced,” Ferrer said about the check, laughing at the double meaning. “I can put it on my ceiling.”
Sikayun said she was honored to receive the scholarship.
“It’s a really big blessing,” she said. “I’m so privileged to be a recipient of this.”
NMC president Carmen Fernandez was also in the dark about how much money the girls would receive. She was hoping for $2,000 for each of the girls, so she said she was pleasantly surprised when it was revealed each scholarship was for $2,200.
This is the third year that FHB and Guam Business magazine have offered scholarships but the first year for the CNMI to take part. Seven students from the University of Guam and Guam Community College will receive scholarship checks today. The total amount given out this year is $25,600.
“Education is our future,” said Laura-Lynn V. Dacanay, FHB senior vice president and region manager for the CNMI and Guam. “Students are the future. This is what we feel we should value.”
The proceeds for the scholarships came from the Businesswomen of the Year awards gala held earlier this year. Rose Perez Duenas, a physical therapist and owner/clinical director of Sports, Orthopedic and Active Rehabilitation on Guam won the third annual award.
