The Department of Public Safety has 12 new cars that are now ready to serve the community.

Fr. Jesse Reyes blessed the new patrol cars—all 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazers model—during a simple launching ceremony yesterday in front of the DPS office.

DPS Commissioner Santiago Tudela said two cars will each be assigned to Rota and Tinian while the rest will be for Saipan.

This project is supported by a federal grant to the CNMI Criminal Justice Planning Agency through the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program of the U.S. Department of Justice.

It is also supported by the CNMI government and sub-granted by the CJPA Supervisory Council.

The grant was awarded to the CNMI government in 2006 but was delayed due to some changes in specifications.

The vehicles arrived two months ago but the lights and other accessories had to be installed first.

The department previously had eight patrol cars, all of them model 2002 Ford Explorers.

“We’re still be using the old cars but with these new ones, we will be serving the community better,” Tudela said.

Also present during the launching ceremony were CJPA director Jerome Irome, CJPA Supervisory Council vice chair Ike Aquiningoc and Ricardo C. Barcinas, member of the CJPA Supervisory Council representing Rota.

Barcinas expressed elation over the granting of the project by the federal government, saying the Municipality of Rota could not rely solely on local funds.

“We’re very happy that we have this new car. We hope to transfer the two of them to Rota before Christmas so that we can use them and serve the community during the holidays,” Barcinas said.
