Closing arguments may begin later this week
Closing arguments may commence in the latter part of this week in the ongoing jury trial of Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez and co-defendants James A. Santos and Joaquina V. Santos.
The U.S. government has already called to the witness stand its 24th witness—former Commonwealth Utilities Corp. executive director Anthony C. Guerrero.
Guerrero started his testimony last Thursday. As of Friday afternoon, David J. Lujan, counsel for Villagomez, was still cross-examining Guerrero.
The prosecution earlier informed the court that after Guerrero they have only a couple of witnesses. Lujan and Ramon Quichocho, counsel for Joaquina Santos, said they will not call a witness.
Victorino Torres, counsel for James Santos, said he will call a couple of witnesses.
After Guerrero, assistant U.S. attorney Eric O’Malley may call among the remaining witnesses Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent Dana M. McMahon.
Defense counsel, especially Lujan, are expected to conduct a lengthy cross-examination on McMahon.
Today, Monday, is the 15th day of the trial.
Villagomez and his co-defendants are charged with engaging in a conspiracy to defraud CUC of thousands of dollars via a series of needless purchases of a chemical called Rydlyme, which is used to clean engines.
