Joshua Castro Dunn, son of Mr. Robert Edward Dunn and Mrs. Berthilla Castro Dunn of Saipan, has been accepted for the 1999 incoming class at the US Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Dunn received his nomination to the academy from CNMI Resident Representative Juan N. Babauta in January; and the Pentagon announced the acceptance on April 19.

“Congratulations to Joshua and to his parents,” responded Representative Babauta to the news. “Joshua’s acceptance with flying colors is no surprise. He was excellently qualified and it was a pleasure to nominate him for his honor.

“Joshua is a well-rounded individual whose work ethic and disciplined attitude have contributed to his overall success.”

Dunn has a grade point average of 4.056 from the Department of Defense high school he attends on Guam. He prepared himself for post-secondary education by taking advanced placement courses in English Literature and American History.

In addition to academic work, Joshua has volunteered as a judo teacher for youngsters, worked feeding the homeless and visiting the patients at St. Francis Hospital for the Elderly, and helped with beach clean ups and other community service.

Currently, there are three Marianas students in the service academy system: Ulysses Mafnas at the Air Force Academy prep school, Jerome Leon Guerrero, a freshman at the Air Force Academy, and Franicia Tomokane, a freshman at the Naval Academy.

Marianas residents between the ages of 17 and 23, interested in learning more about the academic opportunity offered by nomination to a service academy, or who wish to apply for nomination should contact Resident Representative Juan N. Babauta. Application for nominations must be received by January 15 of each year.
