Three schools received gym equipment totaling $17,000 without spending a single penny yesterday during a brief presentation at the Saipan Mayor’s Office.

The schools—Kagman High School, Saipan Southern High School, and Mount Carmel School—each received two equipment courtesy of Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela, who, along with former Rep. William Torres, coordinated the transfer of items from a military surplus based on Guam to Saipan.

“The mayor is very much into supporting youth programs on Saipan, and this is just one way of doing that,” said Torres. “He has been providing various equipment to the community, and that includes the schools.”

The equipment included several step machines, Cross Robics, a lower back machine, and a Cross Trainer.

Kagman High School principal Doreen Tudela expressed her appreciation to Mayor Tudela and designated the equipment for use by the school’s Physical Education department.

“It’s really great that the mayor made this effort to generously accept equipment and present an opportunity for us to receive them without having to spend for it.”

Torres said the surplus is a community program by the military through the General Services Administration that distributes various items such as furniture, tools, and equipment to the community after being used for three to five years.

“It’s a procedure they must comply with…no matter what condition the equipment are in,” he said. “Some of these are still in excellent condition, and the rest are in very good condition. It’s good that the mayor is taking advantage of this for the benefit of our community.”

Tudela also managed to acquire several tables and chairs from the surplus, which he intends to donate to the Head Start program.

He added that he is currently awaiting a 500-gallon mobile water tank, which was also acquired from the surplus in Guam. The tank is scheduled to arrive sometime next week.

“The community will definitely benefit from all of these,” he said. “I just get them and hand them over for community use.”
