Free wins aid Lost Boyz and She Devils
Throughout the Island Wide Volleyball League season, the Lost Boyz squad has gotten all of the breaks and bounces to help them along the way to a perfect record. Thursday night was no different, as the last of the unbeaten teams notched another win in their belts via forfeit over the Floaters.
With the non-played win, the Lost Boyz improved their record to 10-0 atop the men’s division, while the Floaters dropped to a disappointing 2-7 on the season. Though the Floaters added a loss to their record, the Ol’ Aces (2-7) suffered the same fate in much the same fashion as they have all season—a close game that got away.
This time the loss was to Shag (5-3), as Tony Ichiuo, Jack Kabriel, and company found themselves on the losing end of a three set battle that went down to the wire. Teammates Dan Barcinas, Daryl Roligat, and Jeremy Winkfield helped the Ol’ Aces outlast the Rocball crossovers 25-21 in the first set before having the tables turned in the second.
Mike Olaitiman and Myron Laniyo rallied their squad back from the early setback to take the second set 25-16.
By the time third set ended with a 15-12 score, the Ol’ Aces were in a similar situation—figuring out how a first set advantage over a quality team turned into another loss.
The similarities between the men’s and women’s divisions continued on Thursday night, as the South court kicked off without a game as well. The women had their share of forfeits this year as well, and this time it was the She Devils (8-2) that was rewarded for showing up to the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium on time. The Hitters (2-8) took the loss in stride—or at least they would have if they had made an appearance.
Bootylicious (5-6) didn’t have it quite so easy, as they had to work for their two-set sweep over the Haz Been (2-9). Dolores Rangamar did just about everything except take the team uniforms to the Laundromat, as the team leader served up about half of her team’s points in the 25-18 first set win.
The second set was even harder for Bootylicious, as Maggie George and the Haz Been rallied for 24 points to send the game into extra points. Bootylicious was able to come away with the win to create a little distance from the competition in the standings, 26-24.
