EARTHQUAKE SAFETY TIPS
Since the CNMI has experienced earthquakes in a short period of time, Gov. Juan N. Babauta would like the public to take some time and review the safety tips provided:
1. Stay calm and try not to panic. Panicking only creates more problems.
2. If indoors, do not run outside the building. Stay inside and take cover under a desk, table or anything solid against an inside wall or sturdy frame, like door frame. Stay away from glass windows/door. Use the stairway instead of the elevator to exit the building after the earthquake.
3. If outdoors, stay or move to an area, away from buildings, electrical lines or anything that may fall.
4. If you are in a moving vehicle, stop your vehicle at an open area. Stay away from things that may fall on to your vehicle, like electrical lines/pole, building, etc.
5. If you live along the beach front/in a low coastal area or picnicking, prepare to evacuate. Immediately listen to your radio station for latest emergency information/instruction. Stay away from places that are damaged from the earthquake.
6. Know the location of the main electrical switch box, water/gas valve should there be a need to shut it off.
7. Listen to your radio station to get the latest emergency information.
8. Use telephone only for emergency purposes to prevent our telephone system from being over loaded. over loaded telephone system may impede the operation of our responders as they respond to emergency calls.
9. Take time with your family members to develop your emergency plans.
