The Commonwealth Ports Authority has received a new $4-million federal grant for airport improvement projects on Tinian.

CPA executive director Carlos Salas said the new grant is intended for the strengthening of the parallel taxiway, completion of 8th Avenue, and the construction of a fast-exit taxiway at the Tinian International Airport.

“We can now start drawing down from that grant. The funds are all for Tinian,” Salas said.

He also said CPA will issue a request for proposals from contractors, as soon as EFC Engineers and Architects completes the bid package for the three projects.

The plan forms part of the improvements being made to prepare the airport for international flights, which also include the completion of the 8,600 linear-foot runway and the ongoing construction of a new terminal building.

“[These] projects will make Tinian a self-sustaining and popular casino destination for travelers,” Salas said.

In related news, Salas reported that the architectural design for the extension of the Rota International Airport is now over 30 percent complete.

The project, involves lengthening the currently 6,000-feet-long runway by 1,000 feet, had been delayed due to funding and technical problems.

But Salas said the project should be ready for bidding by May or June, at the latest.

With an estimated cost of $10 million, the runway extension will be funded by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Rota Legislative Delegation.
