Lanes at the Saipan Bowling Center will soon feature heated competition as bowlers vie for top honors in the year’s second edition of the Pepsi King and Queen of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament.

According to tournament director and Saipan Bowling Association treasurer Ross Zapanta, the two-day competition gets underway this Sunday, Feb. 20, 3pm, while Monday’s action begins at 6pm. Awards ceremonies immediately follow the end of Monday’s roll-off.

Zapanta added that SBA members have the option of bowling on either days or both provided that the $15-entrance fee is paid. That said, bowlers who did not bowl on Sunday would be given priority for the Monday shift.

Slots for Sunday’s roll-off is limited to 60 bowlers, while only 48 are allowed to bowl on Monday. Only the higher score will count for the tournament.

Whoever is crowned King is guaranteed to leave the venue with an extra $100 in his wallet, however, the prize could increase to as much as $150 depending on the number of participants.

Meanwhile, Zapanta said the women’s field would only have separate prizes if there are at least 10 competitors.

The Pepsi King and Queen of the Lanes aims to crown monthly champions through the course of the year.

Cash prizes will be up for grabs in the monthly tournament, which alternates between the Saipan Bowling Center and the Capitol Bowling Center.

The top bowlers of the year, based on SBA’s Bowler Ranking System, would then battle it out in the season-end 2005 King and Queen of the Lanes tourney. Not only will a year’s worth of bragging rights be up for grabs, but bowlers will certainly put their game faces on as they also vie for the $1,000 that awaits the overall champion.

Last year, Pacific Trading Co. and its general manager Charles Cepeda spent over $6,000 for the yearlong tournament.

Sign up sheets are available for advance registration and payment, and to determine the number of entries.
