Tinian hosts 1st Annual Union Skate Competition

With the 1st Annual Union Skate Competition just around the corner participants from Tinian, Saipan, and Rota are waiting anxiously to show off their skateboarding skills.
Scheduled for 10am on Feb. 26, the competition features a two-minute freestyle event with three individual age categories, and three open-age categories for Best Trick, Best “Old School” Trick, and an Amped “Air” Contest. The competition will also feature some door prizes for spectators such as skateboard decks and t-shirts.
The coordinator for the event, the 10th Tinian Municipal Council, is hoping for a good turnout for the one-day competition.
“Well, we are hoping that we can have an event that will bring together the youth from all three islands to Tinian for a common passion: skating. Our hope is that the competition will help them form friendships and respect for one another, and that’s why we called it the Union State Competition,” said Tinian Municipal Council chairman Edwin P. Aldan.
To make it easier for Rota and Saipan participants to come to Tinian, registered skaters from Saipan and Rota will receive a one-way ticket aboard the Dynasty Tinian Express ferry.
The 10th Tinian Municipal Council has enlisted the help of the Tinian Mayor’s Office, and the Tinian Youth Center to make the event a success. Posters have been put up all over Tinian, Saipan, and Rota to spread the word about the competition.
Interested skaters should register early for the competition since registration for the event is strictly limited to 60 participants.
To make off-island registration easier for those interested both registration and waiver forms are available online at the official website of Tinian, www.tinianonline.com. Registration forms are also available at the office of the Rota Municipal Council and Youth Centers around Saipan.
Submission deadline for registration and waiver forms is Friday, Feb. 18, 2005. Forms may be faxed to the office of the Tinian Municipal Council at 433-0814 or to the Office of the Mayor at 433-1819.
