Baseball has always been one of the pastimes Saipan has come to love throughout the years, inspiring children and adult alike to excel in sports in the CNMI.

For the inspiration he brought to children and to the entire community of Saipan, Mayor Juan B. Tudela Monday morning presented a certificate of appreciation to the late Miguel Basa Pangelinan at the Saipan Mayor’s Office in San Antonio.

Stella Magofna Pangelinan received the recognition on behalf of her late husband. Also present in the brief ceremony were Sen. Pete Reyes and Rep. Joseph Guerrero.

Before handing over the certificate to Pangelinan’s widow, Tudela said the recognition was for the major and significant contributions the baseball coach did for the youth of Saipan.

He said “a good number of Saipan youth were inspired [by Pangelinan] to become true and dedicated sportsmen.” He said further that Pangelinan has truly contributed a lot in the world of sports on Saipan, both as a coach and as a baseball player.

Public information officer Tony Benavente said that the recognition is the mayor’s appreciation for Pangelinan’s contributions not only in for coaching in baseball but also for being a pioneer for the sport as well.
