Fourth-set charge lifts SKN over Ochobu
SKN remained on top of the World Organized Rocball High School League after holding back a determined Ochobu team yesterday afternoon at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
Intent upon pulling off the upset, Ochobu opened with a bang and scored one point at a time instead of pounding away on two-point opportunities for a long-contested 12-4 victory in the first set. Not helping the league’s frontrunners was their failure to convert on first serves twice in the set.
Ochobu, however, failed to continue its successful drive and were caught out of rhythm in the second set. Meanwhile, SKN viewed the opening set as an eye opener and broke loose in the second set, firing away for an 11-4 win while cutting their overall deficit to a point, 15-16.
Ochobu then went on a hot run and quickly responded to the SKN surge with a strong start in the third set. A goal by Ichnis Kapwich sparked a 6-0 run that gave Ochobu a comfortable 8-2 advantage.
SKN retaliated in a heartbeat behind the serves of Dennis Camacho, who stunned the Ochobu players for three aces that brought momentum back to SKN’s corner.
Both teams were tied at 10-10, and each had opportunities to close the set, but inconsistency on first serves would hamper their efforts. SKN finally put a serve over the net and eventually grabbed the overall lead, 27-26, by winning the set, 12-10.
Ochobu would not recover from their breakdown and did not put up a strong fight in the final set.
Veteran Irekson Made knocked in a goal for SKN to highlight their 11-2 fourth-set stroll.
Camacho and Danny Peter were both heavy hitters of the match, leading SKN with six points apiece. Camacho had three aces, while Peter connected for an ace and two kees. Made also contributed five points on his goal and a kee.
