Covenant Party establishes women’s group
The Covenant Party of the Northern Marianas has recently launched a ladies committee. The group welcomes all ladies supporting the Covenant Party and will be meeting regularly to support the party’s candidates, particularly the gubernatorial ticket of House Speaker Benigno R. Fitial and Vice Speaker Timothy P. Villagomez.
The group’s first meeting was held on Monday, March 14, at the Covenant Party Headquarters along Middle Road. Attendance was described as “overwhelming,” with more than 70 Covenant Party ladies showing up for the organization’s first meeting.
“The parking lot was full,” said one Covenant Party supporter, who works for the government and wishes to remain anonymous in order to avoid any potential political retaliation from the Babauta administration, which recently terminated the employment of Mr. Jesus Muna of the Commerce Department, who joined the Covenant Party and became its Precinct 1 chairman.
The ladies group is expected to meet every Monday at the party’s headquarters.
Esther S. Fleming, the ladies group’s chairwoman, attended the meeting. Cinta Kaipat, a declared Covenant Party candidate for Precinct 1, also attended the meeting. More prominent local ladies are expected to become actively involved in the Covenant Party’s election campaign for “better times.”
The first ladies committee meeting featured Fitial and Villagomez, who presided over a portion of the meeting.
Fitial emphasized the importance of maintaining the local economy in the face of the garment industry’s decline.
Covenant Party chair Martin A. Manglona also attended the meeting and pledged to organize a full slate of Covenant Party candidates by April 15, 2005. (PR)
