Bilingual contest highlights need for improved instruction methods
Results of the Bilingual Program Competition held at Kagman Elementary School last Saturday proved that there is a need for junior high teachers under the Bilingual Education Program to improve their teaching techniques.
Carolinian itinerant teacher Patricia P. Kapileo, who works under the Public School System Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, said the result of the competition showed that the Bilingual Education Program in all schools should be enhanced, especially at the junior high level.
“Most of the students showed they were competent in the content areas, but in the bilingual education portion, the elementary level students were more knowledgeable answering more bilingual questions correctly than their Junior High School level counterparts,” she said.
Questions were given in the vernacular, mostly in Chamorro and Carolinian, said Kapileo. The questions, she said, were aligned with the BEP’s standard and benchmarks.
Kapileo said the competition was the fourth in as many year and they were expecting that students would have improved, but based on her observation the students did not meet their expectations.
Kapileo said the Bilingual Academic Challenge Bowl is held annually toward the end of each school year to assess the students’ knowledge of what they had learned in the program and to determine their progress throughout the school year. The competition was held for 1st grade to 8th grade. Each grade had three winners.
