Northern Marianas College intern Jean Ballesteros completed her two-month internship with the Marianas Visitors Authority on April 15.

“I’ve learned that it is very challenging to bring in tourists to our island and that it is a lot of hard work,” said Ballesteros. “It was interesting how our visitor arrivals are calculated. I gained that experience with the Research division and I did not realize all the work behind it all.”

Ballesteros is currently pursuing an associate degree in Hospitality Management. She is expected to graduate from NMC in May 2006.

In partnership with the college, students who are studying tourism and hospitality courses are able to gain firsthand experience working with various projects in all the divisions of the MVA.

“We are happy to offer this type of training and we hope that the on the-job-training and experience with MVA has given her new insight into the global tourism industry,” said MVA managing director Vicky Benavente.

Ballesteros expressed that she does not leave MVA empty handed. “I learned so much from this internship because I was given the independence to work on various projects. I also never felt left out because everyone was helpful and easy to work with,” said Ballesteros.
