Tacoma mangles Mets, 14-9
The Toyota Tacoma rallied from a 3-1 deficit early on to earn their third win of the season on Wednesday night as they handed the San Antonio Metropolitans their ninth loss in continuation of the Saipan Major league Baseball Association at Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field in Oleai.
After trailing 3-1 through one and a half innings, the Tacoma chipped away with a run in the bottom of the second before taking the lead for good with five runs off of six hits in the bottom of the third.
Another score in fourth gave the Toyota team an 8-3 advantage over the yellow fellows, but they needed a run in the sixth and five more in the bottom of the eighth to win the game.
Designated hitter Bruce Norita drove the trucks with a team best 3-for-4 that included a pair of singles, a double, and a run batted in while scoring three runs. Teammate J.J. Taitano wasn’t far off of the pace with a solid 3-for-5 performance at the plate that yielded three singles, an RBI, and a run scored, while shortstop J-Boy Guerrero went 3-for-6 with a trio of base hits, an RBI, and a stolen base for the Tacoma.
As powerful as the Tacoma were at the plate, their bats were overshadowed by another big outing from pitcher McGregory Camacho.
Camacho allowed six runs off of nine hits and fanned seven in eight innings atop the hill before handing the ball off to reliever Roy Magofña, who surrendered three runs off of three hits and tallied a punch-out in one inning of clean-up duty.
In the other dugout, catcher Donald Manalo wielded the big stick for the Mets by hitting 4-for-5 on the night with three singles, a double, and four runs scored. Manalo also stole a couple of bases, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Mets to their second win.
As the 2005 edition of the SML winds downs, the first year Tacoma improved their record with the win to a lackluster 3-7, ahead of only the Freedom Air Masters at 2-7, and the San Antonio Mets in seventh at 1-10.
