Japan’s Imperial Household Agency released yesterday the official itinerary for Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko’s visit to Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands on June 27 and 28, 2005.

The imperial couple will depart from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on the afternoon of June 27 and arrive at Saipan’s Francisco C. Ada International Airport after the three-and-a-half-hour flight. They will spend the evening of June 27 at the Hotel Nikko Saipan.

Tuesday morning, June 28, the Emperor and Empress will visit the Monument of the War Dead in the Mid-Pacific located in the village of Marpi. They will also stop at Laderan Babadero (Banzai Cliff) and Puntan Sabaneta (Suicide Cliff) during the morning. Then the Emperor and Empress will visit the Marianas Memorial, which honors the Chamarro and Carolinian population who died during the Battle of Saipan. They will then visit the American World War II Memorial at the Flag Circle and Court of Honor. Both memorials are located at American Memorial Park in Garapan.

After attending a small luncheon at the Hotel Nikko Saipan, the imperial couple will pay an afternoon visit to the Office of Aging’s Manamko Center to speak with Saipan’s elderly population, many of whom were alive during the Battle of Saipan 61 years ago. This will be the last official stop before the Emperor and Empress return to the airport for their flight back to Japan. (PR)
