Yankees bust out whooping stick against Tacoma
The Northern Yankees are on a roll and continued their impressive run in the 2005 Saipan Major League with a 10-run mercy rule annihilation of Toyota Tacoma Monday night at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
The Yankees were hot from the start and by the time game officials called the game off, they had already pounded away for 15 hits, while getting much help from the Tacoma defense en route to a 17-5 victory.
After holding Tacoma in the top of the first, the Yankees wasted no time and quickly got to work, busting the game wide open with a nine-run explosion in the bottom half of the inning. The Yankees sent 13 batters to the plate during the scoring spree, taking advantage of a couple of errors, a hit by pitch, and a wild pitch while getting big connections from veterans Greg Camacho and Robert Bansil, who each drove in two runs.
The Yankees padded their lead in the second inning after Camacho, who made good contact on the wood for a double, crossed home plate on a single by John Reyes.
Still not satisfied with their lead, the Yankees kicked it into high gear and unleashed another run spree in the third inning, with five base runners rounding the diamond to take a commanding 15-0 advantage. Ben Jones and Bansil connected for consecutive singles, and after Tony Camacho walked to load the bases, Mel Sakisat stepped up to the plate and ripped a hard single to bring Jones home. Greg Camacho then drew a base on balls, resulting in Bansil trotting home, and after Tony Camacho crossed home plate, Johnson Jones cracked his second single of the evening, enabling Sakisat and Greg Camacho to score.
Another two runs were added courtesy of Toyota mishaps in the fifth inning, with Sakisat racing home on an error and Reyes scoring on a wild pitch.
Toyota finally got their engine going in the sixth inning, breaking their scoreless streak after Jeremiah Deleon Guerrero reached on an error, stole second and third, and raced home on a sacrifice fly by Ned Norita.
Knowing that they needed a better score to keep the game going, Tacoma exploded in the sixth inning and racked up four runs to put a small dent on the Yankees’ lead. C. Pangelinan led off with a single and quickly moved to third on a double by Leroy Kani. Pangelinan was then brought home on a sacrifice by Mario Aguon, while Norita singled in Kani. Norita and Tony Pangelinan also scored, but Tacoma failed to break the deficit under double digits, resulting in the game being called off.
Greg Camacho led the annihilation, going 2-for-2 with a double, a single, a base on ball, three runs, and three runs batted in while Sakisat had three hits in four at bats with three runs and two RBIs. Bansil and Johnson Jones also had two hits and two RBI’s apiece while Ben Jones went 2-for-4 with two runs.
Norita led Tacoma with a hit, a run, and two RBI’s whiel Kani and Tony Pangelinan each had two hits and a run.
The Yankees leaned on the arm of starting pitcher Everett Ngiraidong, who pitched four scoreless innings allowing four hits and a base on balls while fanning two batters. Rick Jones came in relief and struck out four batters while allowing seven hits.
On Friday night, the Miller Lite Brewers picked up their ninth win of the season by beating Bud Kings.
