Celis still rocking pitchers in SML
The Miller Lite Brewers are currently in second place with a 9-2 win-loss card in the 2005 Saipan Major League, and one big reason why is the bat of hotshot Tony Celis.
Already known as a tough hitter, Celis is making good on trying to record another memorable season and leads the league in four offensive categories.
The infielder has been a nightmare for opposing pitchers, making solid contact in 28 of his 54 at bats for a league-best .579 batting average. He also leads the league with seven doubles, and is tied for the lead with two triples, while being way ahead with his 24 runs batted in as of June 10.
Over 100 points back in the batting race is Northern Yankees slugger Mel Sakisat, who has mustered 18 hits in 39 at bats for an average of .462. Sakisat is among the nine players tied with Celis in the triples department, and shares the lead with three others with one home run. He is also tied for fourth in runs with 16.
Celis’ teammate Manny Sablan is currently third in the batting race with an average of .459 after going 21-for-46, and is second in the doubles department with five and third with 14 RBIs.
Hector Efrain of the San Antonio Mets is fourth on the list with a batting average of .439, accounting for 18 hits in 41 at bats while teammate Mike Palacios is fifth after going 14-for-33 for an average of .424.
Other top hitters include Clifton Silil of the Yankees (.422), Joey Dela Cruz of the Ford Rangers (.410), Dane Lizama of the Brewers (.389), Ben Jones of the Yankees (.386), John Reyes of the Yankees (.382), and J.J. Laniyo of the Rangers (.382).
Yankees catcher Robert Bansil leads the runs department with 19, while Silil and Mark Toves follow with 18 apiece. Lizama (17) and Jones (16) are also among the runs leaders.
Greg F. Camacho, Silil, Dela Cruz, Craig Sanchez, and Mario Aguon are all tied for third with four doubles apiece, while Bansil, Reyes, Ben Mesa, Reno Celis, Lizama, Frances George, Masatoshi Otsuka, and Roque Camacho shared the triples lead with Sakisat and Tony Celis.
Mesa, Johnson Jones, and Lizama have also went yard once, while Silil (15), Lizama (10), and Reyes (10) are among the leaders in driving in runs.
