At least 13 gay impersonators will take center stage at the Liberation Day celebration, shaking their booties and lip-synching to the tunes of their favorite entertainers from Broadway to discotheque divas.

Dubbed as “Paper Dolls in Action, The Greatest Performance! A Lip Synch, Evening Gown and Fantasy Costume Competition,” the event will be held on June 24, Sunday, 8pm at the Liberation Day Carnival in Garapan Fishing Base, Beach Road.

The 13 impersonators will entertain the crowd as they vie for the three categories in the event, which are the lip synch, evening gown, and fantasy costume categories.

Event coordinator Irwin Jamisola said two of the gay impersonators would come from Tinian and 11 contestants will be from Saipan.

He said three local gay impersonators have already enlisted to participate in this event. The contestants, he said, will lip-synch to songs by popular artists such as Grace Jones, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Billie Holiday, Mariah Carey and many more. “The highlight of this event is the lip synch category,” he said.

He said the event would be a competition and a variety show for the carnival patrons to enjoy when they visit the fair. He said the event would be a display of colorful and outlandish costumes.

Jamisola said the event also aims to make the local community aware that such competitions exist. Jamisola said he organized the event to introduce the competition to the CNMI since such contests already exist in other countries.

“I hope the competition will serve as an eye opener for the local community that gays are not for salons only but they are also entertainers,” Jamisola said, adding that the event would also serve as a venue to display the talents of the contestants.

Tan Holdings Corp. employees, Ely Arago and other individuals are sponsoring the event. Jamisola said he is inviting the public to come, join and witness the “once-in-a-lifetime” event.
