The Office of the Special Assistant for Youth Affairs is moving the upcoming Youth Bazaar Summer Camp supposedly because of a delay in the release of funds.

Special assistant Florence Kirby said they were at first disappointed with the delay of the release of the funds to her office but she said she got a guarantee it would be released yesterday.

“It’s unfortunate that we would have to move our schedule,” Kirby said.

She said she met with the Finance Department yesterday and was assured that the funds would be released.

Kirby said her group would still have to mount and pitch tents as soon as they receive the funding. They would have to work double time now just to meet the Wednesday opening of the camp, she said.

The Youth Bazaar Summer Camp will be held at the Hopwood Junior High School’s beach ground. The camp will be formally opened on June 22 at 7:30am.

The summer camp is still inviting all children and youth eight to 18 years old. Kirby said that there are already 100 who have already registered for the summer camp and they are still accepting registration for those who have not enlisted yet. Kirby earlier said the camp expects to draw more than 300 participants.

She said more teenagers applied for volunteer work in the camp.

Kirby encouraged all other community members of any ethnic group to participate in the camp and share with the participants the arts and crafts of their native countries.

The camp is charging a minimal fee to cover the children’s insurance and meals for the duration of the summer camp. The fee is $50 for age eight to 11 and free for age 12 to 17.

She said these children would have fun and be more productive during the school break. They would learn music, modern and cultural dances, sports, cooking, carpentry, and many other things.

The Youth Affairs Office, said Kirby, will also be participating in the upcoming Liberation Day celebration and the output of the summer camp will be displayed during the celebration.

Interested parties can contact the Youth Affairs Office at 664-2228 or 664-2248 for more information and registration.
