Weather conditions are expected to slowly improve in the next few days, according to the Emergency Management Office, with winds gradually subsiding and showers and thunderstorm decreasing, as Tropical Storm Banyan moves farther north away from the Marianas over the weekend.

Based on the information received from National Weather Service in Guam, EMO said that weather today will be mostly cloudy to partly cloudy, with scattered showers and then isolated showers. South winds will continue at 20 to 25 miles per hour and decrease to 15 to 20 miles per hour by tonight.

No watches or warning are currently in effect, the EMO said, but the small craft and high surf advisories remain in effect for the islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota.

Winds will continue from the south at 23 to 29 mph gusting to 40 mph. Large southwest swell were seen to bring hazardous surf of 10 to 12 feet yesterday along south southwest and west facing shorelines but they are expected to decrease slowly by today.

EMO, however, is still advising residents, especially sea tour operators and divers on Saipan, Tinian and Rota, to avoid venturing near reefs and exposed beaches as wind and wave condition support dangerous rip currents, especially those along southwest coasts.

EMO also said that lightning risk is moderate. Cloud-to-ground lightning was expected yesterday and last night. The agency is advising residents to avoid being in the water during heavy rain or when you see lighting. Motorist are advised to take extra precautionary measures when driving in heavy rain.
