SML: Another day, another delay

Rather than hearing the home plate umpire call “Play ball” last night, the players and fans of the Saipan Major League received the disappointing news from league coordinator Tony Rogolifoi that Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field needs a few more days before the boys of summer return to play the game they love.

Not only was the start of the much anticipated playoffs called off last night, it was also put on hold tonight but is expected to resume Friday, pending the drainage of the infield and the usage of field leveling equipment from the Department of Public Works.

Despite the sun and heated desire of the Northern Yankees and Budweiser Kings to get the postseason underway, Rogolifoi said that the Oleai Sports Complex will be without the cacophony s of leather balls and wooden bats.

Though the Northern Yankees took the pennant to wrap up the regular season months ago, the postseason action was put on hold to provide the CNMI all-star team ample time to prepare for the international competition. Now that the Mini-SPG’s are finished and the players have returned, the only thing that will further delay the race for the championship is the weather. If today is anything like the dry heat of yesterday, the playoffs will be a go with the Yankees facing off against the Budweiser Kings tomorrow at 6:30pm. More dry weather will allow the defending champion Miller Lite Brewers and the Ford Rangers to continue the postseason schedule with the start of their best-of-three series Monday night. The winners will advance to a best-of-five series in the championship.
