…as well as public schools

Despite the sporadic power outages currently being implemented on Saipan, all public schools have so far been spared from this dilemma.

PSS associate commissioner for administrative services David M. Borja said he would have to thank Gov. Juan N. Babauta and the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. for the undisturbed regular classes of the 20 public schools in the Commonwealth. He said the governor expressed to the school board that the government would try its best not to disrupt the learning process of the students, especially since school just started a week ago.

“The plan is to make sure that schools are the least affected and we really thank him [governor] for that,” Borja said.

Borja said the Education office is glad that the power outage occurs mostly after school hours. “We notice that the areas that affect the schools are occurring after the schools are dismissed,” Borja said.

During the opening of the classes last week, Borja said the only problem they encountered was the shortage of desks, chairs, and teachers. PSS then distributed 72 chairs to schools that complained of lack of chairs. Borja said the office distributed 20 chairs each for Oleai Elementary School and San Antonio Elementary School, 17 for Koblerville Elementary School and at least 15 to William S. Reyes Elementary School.

Borja said the chairs were acquired from the defunct Northern Marianas College Laboratory School at Fina Sisu. He said the former lab school contains the right-sized chairs for elementary schools.
