‘Get out of the way!’

Members of the House Majority should be reminded of the old adage “You can’t have your cake and eat it, too.” In May this year, shortly after the governor declared a state of emergency at CUC, the House passed a resolution, authored by Speaker Ben Fitial, authorizing the governor 100 percent reprogramming authority from available Commonwealth funds to remedy the power generation problems at CUC. In fact as early as February of this year, Vice Speaker Tim Villagomez, in a plea to the governor, stated, “As the chief executive of the Commonwealth, your leadership is urgently needed to avoid blackouts and resolve this crisis.”

This week House majority spokesman Charles P. Reyes Jr., charged that the administration has illegally reprogrammed funds to alleviate the crisis at CUC. Reyes goes on to say that the House majority is displeased with the governor’s decision to reprogram monies from various funding sources. When the Legislature shirked their responsibility in funding the government’s utility budget to prevent a crisis at the local utility, they wiped their hands clean of the mess, passing the buck and leaving the tough decisions to the administration. If you are going to lead, step to the front of the line and lead. If you are going to be a follower, take a step to the back. But if you are going to do neither, stand back and get out of the way!
