At least 80 applications have reached the Division of Environmental Quality for the upcoming water operator examinations in October this year.

The number of applications rose from only 25 earlier this week, after the DEQ announced that it would not entertain applications after Sept. 14.

DEQ’s new regulations require public water systems to have certified operators by Jan. 1, 2006. This year’s exams, which will be held at the Pacific Islands Club’s Charley’s Cabaret on Oct. 6, will be the only batch slated for the year.

The number of applications, though, fell short of the 111 public water systems in the CNMI.

“If public water systems do not employ certified operators by the deadline, they will be fined for failure to comply with regulations,” the DEQ warned.

Among those who have submitted applications for the exams are representatives from the Commonwealth Utilities Corp., which operates the biggest public water systems in the CNMI. Other public water systems include bottled water companies.

The DEQ, in collaboration with the Guam Environmental Protection Agency, will conduct the exams.
