The Commonwealth Election Commission has advised absentee voters that the agency was releasing a listing of their names to candidates requesting such information.

CEC executive director Gregorio Sablan said that most information being maintained by the election commission is open to the public. Thus, the commission is compelled to provide information, including a listing of absentee voters, to anyone who makes an Open Government Act request for it.

“Applicants for absentee voting should know that candidates are now seeking the information from the commission and the commission must, in accordance with law, provide the information,” CEC said.

The commission also reminded qualified individuals of today’s deadline for voter registration. This deadline applies to individuals who plan to vote within or outside the Commonwealth.

According to CEC, some people have submitted applications to vote absentee, even though they are not registered to vote.

“We can only provide absentee ballots to registered voters. Individuals who are outside the CNMI must register to vote by this date otherwise they will not be allowed to vote on Nov. 5, 2005 or by absentee voting,” the commission said. (Agnes E. Donato)
