Top government officials of the CNMI and the Marianas Visitors Authority conducted a press conference with Northwest Airlines representatives on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005 at the Governor’s Office.

The press conference, at the governor’s office, was to officially state the new daily flight services between Osaka and Saipan. These flights will begin Oct. 1, 2005.

“This situation creates a new level of awareness on how important the travel industry is to the CNMI. The economic impact could’ve been much worse without Northwest Airlines taking over the Osaka route,” said Gov. Juan N. Babauta.

The Legislature provided additional funding to both the MVA and the Commonwealth Ports Authority to entice new air services from international carriers to the CNMI.

The incentive plan from CPA will allow new air services to benefit from a 50-percent discount of passenger fees from October 2005 through September 2006.

The MVA also developed various marketing and PR activities including airlines incentive, brochure support to travel agents and media coverage to promote the Osaka-Saipan route.

“We appreciate all of the CNMI’s support to Northwest Airlines for our new services.” Said James Mueller, Northwest Airlines-Asia managing director.

Attendees at the press conference included Gov. Babauta, Mueller, NW manager Guam and Saipan Richard Parsons, Rep. Martin B. Ada, Repr. Ramon A. Tebuteb, Rep. Arnold I. Palacios, Rep. Joseph P. Deleon Guerrero, CPA Executive Director Carlos Salas, MVA chairman David Sablan, MVA vice-chair Marian Aldan-Pierce, MVA board member Seiji Sato and Yoichi Matsumura, and MVA managing director Vicky Benavente.
