In a show of force, the gubernatorial tandem of House Speaker Benigno Fitial and Vice Speaker Timothy Villagomez led over a hundred supporters to the roadside of Beach Road, San Jose, where they waved at passing motorists with cheers for the Covenant Party.

Carrying placards and posters of candidates of the Covenant Party, supporters waved green flags and cheered “Olomwaay!” asking supporters for their support to the party in the November 2005 polls. Several motorists honked their horns to reciprocate the cheers.

The candidates and supporters lined up by the roadside of Beach Road’s southbound lane, stretching from the San Jose intersection to the Oleai Beach Bar & Grill area.

Fitial and Villagomez said the Covenant Party conducts the waving activity once every two weeks, usually on Fridays.

Earlier this week, Fitial said he convened his family and relatives and expressed strong confidence that his clan fully supports him this time, better than his failed 2001 gubernatorial bid.

One of Fitial’s supporters, 70-year-old Joaquin C. Babauta, claimed to be an uncle of Gov. Juan N. Babauta.

“I’m his uncle, but I don’t want to follow Babauta,” the Fitial supporter said. “The economy is not doing well.”

The supporter said he supports the candidacy of Fitial, who has vowed to remove the fuel surcharge on utility bills. He said that if there would be no change from the present administration, businesses would continue to pull out from the CNMI. “I follow Fitial. I hope he’s going to fix it,” he said. (John Ravelo)
