A school employee is facing criminal charges at the Superior Court for allegedly having sex with an underaged student on three occasions.

The Attorney General’s Office yesterday charged 26-year-old Michael Benavente Angel with three counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the 3rd degree.

CNMI chief prosecutor Jeffrey Moots said the girl was only 17 years old when the incidents happened. Being an employee of the Saipan Southern High School, Angel occupied a position of authority over the student, the prosecutor said.

Moots said the first incident happened inside a room of the Stanford Hotel sometime in Dec. 2004. Sometime in January this year, Angel allegedly had sex with the girl inside a Gualo Rai hotel.

The latest incident happened on Jan. 14, when Angel allegedly had sex with the girl inside a car at the parking lot of the Smiling Cove Marina.
