Over 2,000 guests and spectators mobbed the Sugar King Park yesterday as the Japanese community celebrated Japan’s Autumn Festival.
The Japanese Society in the Northern Marianas organized the event, coinciding with its 20th anniversary. Organization chair Shinichi Yoshida said the celebration also intended to commemorate the 10th year anniversary of the Sugar King temple’s construction.
Thirty groups, organizations and business establishments joined the Japanese Society during the festival. The establishments included Bianca Hotel, 3S Inc., Hafa Adai Hotel, Tony Roma’s, Cappricciosa’s, Ebisuya, World Resort Saipan, Saipan Grand Hotel, Country House, Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach, SPE, Marianas Resort and Spa, Kinpachi Restaurant, Tori Hide, Togawa, Pacific Development, Inc., NTA, R & C, and PMT Tasi Tours, among many others.
Yoshida said the celebration was held so that the CNMI community may also experience how it is like to celebrate the Autumn Festival in Japan. He said this year’s festival was special because a famous dance troupe called the Yosakoyi performed during the celebration. The Yosakoyi is one of the most popular cultural dance group in Hokkaido, Japan.
The festival program started at 11am yesterday and ended at 2pm. Yoshida said the Japanese Society holds the celebration in the Commonwealth every year. The event featured various Japanese delicacies provided by major restaurants on island.
Aside from the food array, the festival also featured games for children and a yard sale, which included various items from toys to clothing and appliances.
