Typhoons surge, Tornadoes blow
Paul Camacho let his bat take over for his arm on Saturday morning as the slugger accounted for more runs than the Tornadoes during their contest at the Kan Pacific Baseball Field in Marpi in the continuation of the Saipan Major League Master’s division.
The Typhoons were more than the Tornadoes could handle as they powered out 27 runs off of 28 hits in the abbreviated affair that featured standout performances by Saipan’s senior sluggers.
Camacho led all longball launchers with an outstanding 5-for-6 performance at the plate in which he drove in seven runs off of four singles and a double. Despite finding plenty of success with the swat stick, the heavy hitter found it difficult to get the job done from the mound as he pitched to a total of four batters before turning over the hurling duties to Dave Kapileo.
Kapileo obliged Camacho to go the rest of the way allowing one run off of one hit and fanned eight through five innings before the umpires invoked the 10-run mercy rule. Not only did he cause problems for the Tornadoes hitters, Kapileo also made a mockery of their pitching by hitting 5-for-6 with a pair of singles, two doubles, a triple, and knocking in six runners.
Shortstop Bob Lizama also enjoyed the day at the ballpark with a memorable 5-for-7 outing in which he connected with four singles and a double, scored four times, and drove in three runners for runs.
The Typhoons jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first when Leo Bobai, Lizama, and Camacho crossed home plate, but the Tornadoes answered in the bottom of the inning when Ed Santos, Manny Tenorio, and Dave Camacho rounded the bases to tie the game.
The scoring continued in the top of the second as the Typhoons scored four run off of seven hits to take a 7-3 lead, and while the Tornadoes answered with a run in the bottom of the second, it only padded the stat sheet.
After scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third, the Typhoons scored 15 runs off of 11 hits and four walks to put the game away for good at 24-4. They added another three in the top of the fifth for good measure, but the three Tornadoes pitchers were less than amused.
