Education Week expanded into a monthlong activity
The CNMI is joining the rest of the country in celebrating American Education Week, with the theme “A Strong America Starts with Great Public Schools.”
Acting Commissioner of Education David M. Borja said the local Public School System is celebrating Education Week from Nov. 13 to 19 with other schools in the United States.
He also announced that, unlike the rest of the United States, the CNMI is having an extended celebration, following Gov. Juan N. Babauta’s proclamation last week designating the entire month of November as Education Month.
“The future of the Commonwealth lies in the education of its children and education is the cornerstone upon which our society is built,” part of the proclamation reads.
Though the PSS is in a tight financial situation, it has made great strides over the past several years and continues to improve despite meager resources.
According to the proclamation, education plays an important role in society and Education Month aims to recognize those who have contributed to the development of the local education system. It further says that Education Month provides an opportunity to increase public awareness of the role of education in society and to promote close cooperation and stronger relationship between educators and the community.
Borja said that this year, Education Month would focus on the success stories of CNMI educators. For instance, on Nov. 23, the CNMI will celebrate Education Day, which would recognize public schools teachers throughout the islands. One will be selected as the CNMI Teacher of the Year. Education Day will be held at the Laolao Bay Golf Course in Kagman.
This year’s CNMI Teacher of the Year will participate in the nationwide competition for the National Teacher of the Year award. The 2004-2005 Teacher of the Year was Lavena C. Babauta, who flew to Dallas, Texas in January for the national recognition.
