Environmental poem, essay contest entries due Friday
Environmental education and outreach activities, such as the poem and essay competition, will end on Friday, March 31. Both events are part of the Division of Environmental Quality 23rd Annual Environmental Awareness celebration.
“While we visit schools teaching them about the environment, there is a lot we can gain from our students. DEQ annually holds the writing events to learn from the students,” said DEQ public information officer Reina Camacho.
The poem and essay contests are a CNMI wide competition. According to Chris Tomokane, Environmental Technician and coordinator for both the essay and poem contests, he expects a lot of entries this year.
“Poems must reflect this year’s theme, our environment, the pride of Marianas and use the haiku 3-line, 5-7-5 syllable format.” The poem contest is only open for students in the first through sixth grades.
High school students interested in entering the essay competition are asked to explain the importance of conservation, responsibility, and pride in our islands’ natural resources in 300-500 words.
According to Tomokane, “stationary and art supplies will be awarded to the winners. The supplies are valued at $100 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.” The winners of the poem and essay contest shall be awarded on April 20.
