Consul urges displaced Filipinos to go home
Philippine Consul Julia Heidemann is asking Filipino contract workers whose contracts were not renewed to explore opportunities back home instead of staying as illegals in the CNMI.
She made this appeal in the wake of reports that some Filipinos who are due for renewals were told that their contracts were disapproved by the Department of Labor and Immigration because local residents qualify for their jobs.
According to Heidemann, the priority of the CNMI government is to first consider the local residents for vacancies being advertised in the papers.
“Let’s try to explore the job market in the Philippines,” she said. The CNMI’s job market is already congested to discourage them from staying on.
This year’s group is also not covered by the Immunity Law, she added.
Labor Representative Araceli Maraya urged displaced Filipino workers to visit her office before returning to the Philippines. The Philippines labor office in the CNMI is tasked to monitor displaced workers in order to prioritize their placements in job vacancies listed with the Department of Labor and Employment.
Their names will be sent to DOLE in Manila and will be assisted by the agency. Maraya said DOLE has an immediate need for high speed sewers.
