Ancient Vanuatu artifacts returned

PORT VILA, Vanuatu – French archaeologists have returned articles, mostly jewelry, removed two decades ago from the ancient grave of a Vanuatu high chief.

The grave belonged to Roimata, paramount chief of Éfaté Island, on which the capital, Port Vila, now is located.

Observers said the return of the artifacts could revive a dispute over the legitimate holder of the important Éfaté chiefly title. (Pacific Islands Report)
