Camp Show hopes to recreate lighter side of life during war
Camp shows helped many military men and women ease heartache and pain, loss and confusion during and following World War II. As part of the 60th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battles of Saipan and Tinian, a vibrant camp show will entertain veterans, friends, families, and community members on June 12 and 13. The show will start at 7pm each evening in the American Memorial Park Amphitheater. The show is free.
The Camp Show will recreate the setting and entertainment offered through the United Services Organization (USO) sixty years ago. Produced by Saipan-based Friends of the Arts, the Camp Show will provide a trip down memory lane with an authentic review of comedy, music, and dance. Comedy routines made famous by popular comedians of the day will be “punctuated” by the vocal stylings reminiscent of Danny Kaye, the Andrews Sisters, and more. Music and comedy will combine in a hilarious version of “Honey Bun” and other sketches from the musical South Pacific. The swing era will come to life and the audience will be treated to dynamic cultural performances by popular local dance groups.
No camp show would be complete without beautiful women, and the CNMI’s own beauty queens will model the fashions of the day. As a special treat, world renowned classical pianist Roman Rudnytsky will provide a spirited tribute to veterans with his special arrangement of patriotic hymns, marches, and other period songs.
The Camp Show will provide an opportunity for veterans, local residents, and visitors to relive, in a small way, the lighter side of the era. Be sure to be there.
