Jerome Delos Santos extended his homerun hitting streak and knocked in three runners en route to the D-9ers upsetting the pennant champion Saipancell/NMC Proa 14-4 in Game 1 of the Island Wide Fast Pitch Softball League finals Thursday night at the Oleai Sports Complex.

Delos Santos waited until the third inning to score on an inside the park homerun, and finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of singles and a pair of scores. Teammate Mark Toves also hit an inside the parker on his sole connection of the night, but his came in the second inning amidst a seven run flurry that decided the game early.

In what was a departure from their regular strategy, the Proa started pitcher Joe Camacho in lieu of the dominating Tony Satur because he had found some success in their last outing. Unfortunately for Camacho, the D-9ers had the answer for his pitching this time around, and rocked him for 12 runs off of seven hits before he was relieved in the top of the third. After an effortless first inning, Camacho struggled to find his control and walked five batters that all later turned into runs.

On the other side of the mound, D-9ers hurler Jess Peterson allowed four runs on seven hits, and struck out two batters through five complete innings of work before Ben Sablan finished what he started.

Proa took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when catcher Manny Sablan singled home centerfielder Ken Kalen, but that was the extent of their good fortune. The D-9ers took the lead for good in the top of the second when they erupted for seven off of four hits, three walks, and an error—including the inside the park homerun by centerfielder Toves. They continued where they left off in the top of the third inning, scoring five runs to increase their advantage to a 12-1 margin.

Proa finally started to produce some offense in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 13-4, but by that time the fate of the game had already been decided.

D-9ers catcher Pepi Tenorio had a solid night on both sides of the ball, as he finished the night 3-for-4 with a trio of singles and two scores.

The championships continued last night, but the results were not available as of press time.
