* During an earthquake, stay inside and take cover under a desk, table, or anything solid against an inside wall or a sturdy doorway frame and hold on. Stay away from glass windows or anything that may fall and injure you (like lighting fixtures, furniture items, etc.). Many injuries occur as people try to enter or exit buildings.

* Do not use candles, matches or any type of open flames indoors due to possible gas leak caused by the earthquake.

* If outdoors, stay or move to an open area away from buildings, electrical lines, or anything that may fall.

* If you are in a moving vehicle, try to stop in a safe location away from buildings, utility wires or poles or anything that may fall.

* If at school, do not rush to the doorways, stay calm and get under a desk facing away from the windows. If in the playgrounds, stay in an open area, away from buildings or anything that may fall on you.

* If at work, do not use elevators. Power outages shut down elevator systems and trap people inside. Use stairways instead. If your office is in a high-rise building, get under a desk away from the windows.

* If you live along the beachfront or in a low coastal area, beware of a possible tsunami and be prepared to evacuate to higher ground or upper floors of a structurally safe building.
