Revitalization of Hagatna gets $1.3M grant
Guam will receive a grant in the amount of $1,398,000 from the Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs to help revitalize and restore historic Hagatna, it was announced yesterday.
The grant will provide funding that will begin the process of restoring the island’s capitol, a project supported by a diverse cross section of Guam’s community.
“Guam’s history is fascinating, and many historic sites and buildings can be found in Hagatna,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior David B. Cohen. “The Governor, the Guam Legislature, the Guam Chamber of Commerce, the Guam Hotel and Restaurant Association, the Guam Visitors’ Bureau and the University of Guam have all come together to promote this project, and the Office of Insular Affairs was delighted to support the effort.”
Guam’s capital city was partially destroyed during the liberation of Guam in 1944. Hagatna was the center of economic and political life on the island, and Guam’s leaders have long wanted to restore splendor to the area.
Proposed projects include refurbishing of historic structures and the creation of a path or walkway featuring the many interesting sites found in Hagatna. The grant will be funded through the Office of Insular Affairs’ Capital Improvement Program, which is designed to fund infrastructure projects in the territories. (PR)
