I beg to differ

I am writing in response to the letter to the editor sent by Buddy Petersen in the Feb. 4, 2005, edition of the Saipan Tribune. Buddy feels that true leadership is shown by unwavering loyalty toward a person or political party, and that such loyalty is a critical value to teach future generations. Especially in countries like Saipan that adopt democratic principles, the exact opposite is true; children must never be taught to show blind loyalty to any one person or political party. True democracy is exercised only when people are allowed and encouraged to draw their own unbiased opinions of a person or party, and to continually review those opinions in light of change.

Telling Heinz Hofschneider and David Apatang to wait their turn is not a sign of democracy; it is yet one more sign of the favoritism and corruption that pervade this island. Sen. Pete P. Reyes is right in saying that all Republican Party supporters, not just a select few, should have the right to decide whether to hold a primary and which candidate they feel would best represent the Republican Party. It is every person’s right to question their leaders‚ ideals and actions in the continual goal toward true democracy. Any person who demands unwavering support is a dictator, not a true leader, nor are they demonstrating values that should be taught to future generations.
