Korean doctor to be named CNMI’s goodwill ambassador
Gov. Juan N. Babauta is expected to name today a popular Seoul-based medical doctor, Chang Kyu Kim, as goodwill ambassador for the CNMI.
Dr. Kim will meet with the local media at 10:30am today at the Governor’s Office to discuss how he can help boost Korean tourism in the CNMI.
Kim, a popular TV personality for his “non-conservative views,” is a gynecologist and obstetrician, a scholar, and author of several books.
Born in Seoul, Kim graduated from Yonsei University, Medical College in 1979. For three years beginning in 1982, he served as flight surgeon for the Republic of Korea Army.
He is said to be working as a researcher on the human genomic project at the Center for Human Genetics at Boston University School of Medicine since 1997. His main area is prenatal genetic testing.
Kim’s latest studies on diagnosing prenatal chromosomal abnormalities was presented at the 14th International Congress in Amsterdam, where the conference themes were “The Fetus as Patient” and “Fetal Cardiology.”
Kim has reportedly been campaigning in Korea for the approval of emergency contraceptives as a prescription drug, a means to reduce unwanted pregnancies and provide a momentum for sex education in the country.
Kim is a member of UNICEF, Korea Federation of Environment Movement, and Korea and America Friendship Society.
Kim and his wife, Dr. Jung Soon Park, MD, live in Seoul. They have two children, who are currently studying in the United States.
